Two ways to get Markdown into Word

1. Copy for Word (paste into an open document)

Best when you’re adding a section to a document you already have. Paste or type your Markdown above, press Copy for Word, then click where you want it in Word and press Ctrl+V (⌘+V on a Mac). The clipboard gets formatted HTML: bold, italics, lists, links, tables with borders, and code in a monospaced font.

2. Download .docx (a new document)

Best for a whole document. The file is built directly as a Word document instead of being pasted, so it can use features that pasting can’t reliably reproduce:

  • Markdown headings become Word’s built-in Heading 1–6 styles, which Word’s Navigation pane and automatic table of contents are built from.
  • Numbered lists are real Word numbering, including nested lists and lists that start at a number other than 1.
  • Footnotes ([^1]) become Word footnotes, and links to headings ([see setup](#setup)) jump within the document.
  • Tables get a header row marked to repeat at the top of each page, and column alignment from the Markdown.

Tips for clean results

  • Leave a blank line between paragraphs. Lines with no blank line between them are joined into one paragraph.
  • To force a line break inside a paragraph, end the line with two spaces or a backslash.
  • A table needs a header row and a separator row such as |---|---| underneath it.
  • After downloading, change the look of the whole document at once by modifying the Normal and Heading styles in Word.

Only need a spreadsheet-style table? Use Markdown table to Word, which adds table styles and landscape pages. Going the other way? Convert Word to Markdown.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between “Copy for Word” and “Download .docx”?

Copy puts formatted text on your clipboard so you can paste it into a document you already have open. Download creates a new .docx file built directly from the Markdown, with Word heading styles, numbered lists, footnotes and internal links set up exactly.

Why does my text have ** and # symbols in Word?

That text is Markdown, a plain-text format that uses symbols for formatting. Word shows the symbols as ordinary characters when you paste plain text. Paste it into this tool instead, then copy the formatted version or download a .docx.

Does it work with Word on a Mac and Word for the web?

The downloaded .docx is a standard Word file, so it opens in any version of Word that reads .docx files, including Word for Mac and Word for the web. Copy and paste depends on your browser letting the page put formatted text on the clipboard; if it doesn't, use the download instead.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser; the text is never uploaded.

Can I convert a Word document back to Markdown?

Yes, use the DOCX to Markdown converter. It runs in your browser too.

What if Copy for Word doesn't paste any formatting?

Some browsers or security settings block rich clipboard access. Use Download .docx instead, then copy what you need from that file.
