What you get in Word
- A native Word table you can edit, sort and restyle with Word’s own table tools.
- A header row in bold, marked to repeat at the top of each page if the table runs onto the next page.
- Column alignment from the separator row:
:---left,:---:center,---:right. Numbers usually read best right-aligned. - Column widths set from how much text each column holds, so a narrow “Qty” column doesn’t take the same space as a description.
- Inline formatting inside cells: bold, italic, strikethrough, code and links.
- Rows kept whole: a row won’t split across two pages.
Table styles
| Style | Looks like | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Grid, shaded header | Borders on every cell, light-blue header row | Data tables, specifications |
| Banded rows | Grid plus alternate rows shaded | Long tables you read across |
| Minimal | Rules above and below the header and at the end, no vertical lines | Reports and academic-style tables |
Markdown table syntax, quickly
| Item | Qty | Price |
|:-------|:---:|------:|
| Apples | 3 | $1.20 |
| Pears | 12 | $4.80 |- The second line (the delimiter row) is required. Each cell in it contains only hyphens, with an optional colon at either end to set alignment.
- Leading and trailing pipes can be left out, and the columns don’t need to line up in the source.
- Block elements such as lists or code blocks can’t go inside a table cell.
Need the table in a spreadsheet instead?
Use Markdown table to Excel to download an .xlsx or .csv file with numbers stored as numbers. For whole documents with text, lists and tables, the MD to DOCX converter does everything this page does with standard settings.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a Markdown table to a Word table?
Paste the Markdown table above, choose a table style, and press Download .docx, or press Copy for Word and paste into an open document. Either way you get an editable Word table, not a picture or tab-separated text.
Why isn't my table recognized?
A Markdown table needs a header row followed by a separator row made of hyphens, such as |---|---|. Without the separator row it's just text with pipe characters.
How do I put a | character inside a cell?
Escape it with a backslash: \|. An unescaped pipe starts a new column.
Can a cell contain several lines?
Markdown table cells are single lines. You can use <br> inside a cell to force a line break, and the converter turns it into a line break in the Word cell.
My table is too wide for the page. What can I do?
Choose Landscape orientation, pick a smaller font size, or both. Column widths are set from the amount of text in each column, so short columns stay narrow.
Can I convert several tables at once?
Yes. Every table in the text is converted, along with any headings or paragraphs between them.
