Converted on your device: your Markdown is never uploaded.
How to convert MD to DOCX
- Add your Markdown. Paste it into the editor, type it, or drag a
.md,.markdownor.txtfile onto it. - Check the preview. The right-hand pane shows how the document will look, and updates as you type.
- Pick a font, size and page size, then press Download .docx. The file opens in Microsoft Word and in other apps that read .docx files, such as Google Docs.
What gets converted
The converter reads GitHub-Flavored Markdown and maps each element to the Word feature that does the same job, rather than imitating the look with manual formatting.
| Markdown | In the Word document |
|---|---|
# Heading to ###### Heading | Built-in Heading 1–6 styles, so the Navigation pane and table of contents work |
**bold**, *italic*, ~~strike~~, `code` | Bold, italic, strikethrough and an “Inline Code” character style |
| Fenced code blocks | A “Code Block” paragraph style: monospaced, shaded, with indentation kept |
| Numbered and bulleted lists, nested | Real Word lists that renumber correctly when you edit them |
Task lists - [x] | ☒ and ☐ check boxes |
| Tables, with column alignment | Word tables with a header row set to repeat at the top of each page |
Links, including [text](#heading) | Clickable hyperlinks; links to a heading jump inside the document |
Footnotes [^1] | Real Word footnotes at the bottom of the page |
| Blockquotes and GitHub alerts | Indented “Quote” paragraphs with a colored bar and label |
| Images | Embedded pictures, scaled to fit the page |
| YAML front matter | Removed from the text; its title names the file |
The options, explained
- Font sets the body and heading font. Code always uses Consolas, a monospaced font; if a computer doesn’t have it, the word processor substitutes another font.
- Size is the body text size. Headings scale from it, and code is set slightly smaller.
- Page chooses US Letter or A4 with 1-inch margins. It starts on the size usual for your region and remembers your choice.
- File name comes from the uploaded file’s name, the front-matter title or the first
# heading, and you can change it.
Images
Images written as data URIs are embedded directly. For images on the web, your browser downloads each one and embeds it, as long as the site hosting it allows cross-origin requests. SVG and WebP images are converted to PNG first. If an image can’t be fetched, it becomes a link (or a placeholder for relative paths), and the rest of the document converts normally.
Limitations
- LaTeX math and Mermaid diagrams stay as text.
- Raw HTML is simplified: its text and images are kept, but HTML layout (such as
<div>or HTML tables) is not. - Code blocks are not syntax-colored.
- Up to 5 MB of Markdown per document, and up to 100 images.

Frequently asked questions
Is this MD to DOCX converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. The only limit is 5 MB of Markdown per document, which is far more than most files need.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The Markdown is parsed and the .docx file is built by JavaScript running in your own browser. Your text never leaves your device. The only network requests the converter makes are for images you reference by URL, which your browser fetches directly from wherever they are hosted.
Will the headings work in Word's Navigation pane and table of contents?
Yes. Markdown headings become Word's built-in Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles, and Word builds its Navigation pane and automatic table of contents from heading styles.
Why did some images become links instead of pictures?
Your browser can only embed an image from another website if that website allows it (a setting called CORS). When a server doesn't, or the image uses a relative path such as images/logo.png, the converter inserts a link or a placeholder instead of failing. Images pasted as data URIs are always embedded.
Can I convert a GitHub README.md to Word?
Yes. Open the raw README.md file or paste its contents. Tables, task lists, footnotes and GitHub alerts such as > [!NOTE] are converted. Images that use relative paths inside the repository can't be reached from here, so replace them with full https:// URLs if you need them embedded.
Does it support LaTeX math, Mermaid diagrams or syntax highlighting?
Not yet. Math and Mermaid source are kept as plain text or code, and code blocks are set in a monospaced font on a shaded background without colors.
Can I change the formatting after converting?
Yes. The document uses Word styles (Normal, Heading 1 to 6, Quote, Code Block and Inline Code), so changing a style in Word updates every paragraph that uses it.
How do I convert a DOCX back to Markdown?
Use the DOCX to Markdown converter on this site. It reads headings, lists, tables, links, footnotes and images from a .docx and gives you Markdown, also without uploading anything.
